Opening Explorer in Windows 2000 Professional
If you're using Windows 2000 Professional When I open Explorer, the view defaults to My Documents. This is fine if you always want to work with documents when you open Windows Explorer. But if you want to manage your hard drive(s), this can be problematic and requires additional mouse movement and clicks to get you where you want to go today.
To change this, you won't need a Registry hack. You can do it with a modified shortcut. Right-click the shortcut that you use to open Explorer and choose Properties. When the dialog box opens, click the Shortcut tab. Now, click in the Target entry box and change whatever is there now to (for your C:\ drive):
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,c:\.
Click OK to close the dialog box and apply your settings. When you click the shortcut now, Explorer will open to C:\.
Note that this may change your Explorer icon. If you want the old icon back, right-click the shortcut and choose Properties. Click the Shortcut tab again and then click Change Icon. When the Change Icon dialog box opens, double-click the icon you want to use for your shortcut. Click OK to close the dialog box and start using your new icon.
