Eliminating an NTFS Partition
If you've ever had problems with a hard drive and decide its easier to go ahead and nuke it from orbit and start over from scratch but get some unusual or cryptic error messages from FDISK saying that it can't delete the partition until you first delete the logical drive assigned to it (but it doesn't have any logical drive letter assigned to it) then listen up.
This isn't as unusual a problem as it sounds. We've come across this situation when saving hard drives from out dated systems. The easiest way to correct this problem is to start a Windows NT 4.0 Workstation install, and delete the partition when Setup reaches the point where it lets you pick where to install NT. After you delete the partition, abort the installation. You could also use some third party software to delete the partition. One we have tried is Ranish Partition Manager. You will find it at
http://www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/.
We use it to delete unwanted partitions and then go back to FDISK to create new ones.
