In an earlier tip, we introduced you to the Task Scheduler, a utility that runs the programs you want, according a schedule you define. To open this utility, double-click the Task Scheduler icon in the tray of your Taskbar. (If you don't see an icon there, select Start--Programs--Accessories--System Tools--Scheduled Tasks. Then select Advanced, Start Using Scheduled Tasks to activate this utility and place its icon on your Taskbar.)
The schedule of any chore that appears in the Scheduled Tasks window can be modified according to your own work habits. For example, suppose you've set the Windows Critical Update Notification to run every 5 minutes, every day. Let's say you want to change the time that it runs so that it doesn't use so much processor time. To change the schedule, follow these steps.
In the Scheduled Tasks window, right-mouse-click the task you'd like to modify--here, the Windows Critical Update Notification-- and select Properties. Click the Schedule tab andclick the Advanced button. Under the Repeat Task area, change the 5 minute repeat option to some other number. If you change it from every 5 minutes to every 30 minutes, the task will only run once every half hour. Click OK, and you can be sure that the Task Scheduler will obey all your rules.
