Backing Up the Registry

Backing up the Registry files in Windows NT/2000/XP pose more of a problem than performing the same operation in Windows 9x. The Pro version Windows Registry is located in Winnt\System32\Config. To back up the Registry, you have to make a copy of the contents of this folder.

Unfortunately, you can't do this while Windows NT is running. One way to make a Registry backup (if you're using a FAT disk) is to boot into MS-DOS and then copy the files from Winnt\System32\Config. If you use NTFS, you can make a backup by running another instance of Windows NT. For example, if you still have Windows NT 3.51 installed on your computer, you could run it and make a copy of the contents of Winnt\System32\Config.
