Open it in Notepad
There are times when you want to open a file such as, Autoexec.old, or Bootlog.prv. All of these files have one thing in common--they are "unknown" files that have no associated program. Sometimes the safest thing to do with unknown files is to check out their contents in Notepad.

To do so, simply right click the file and then choose Open with... from the context menu. In the Open with... dialog box, locate NOtepad and highlight it. If you want to default Notepad to open that type of file every time, click the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file, check box; and then click OK.
