The New v.90 Standard Brings 56k to a Phone Line Near You
Some day, we'll all have cable or satellite-based connections to the Internet. But for now, most of us still need to make do with dial-up connections; and that means we still need modems. Fortunately, the new crop of V.90-compatible, 56-Kbps modems will help ease the wait.
The V.90 protocol, finalized in September of 1998, brings a digital standard to phone line based communications. You may know that the V.90 standard is the result of a compromise among the x2 and K56flex camps in the modem industry. Most vendors offer V.90-compatible modems that contain either native V.90 code or a flash-upgradable BIOS.
