Automatic Power off on Shutdown

If you're wondering if there's some way to power down a Windows NT Workstation 4.0 computer automatically, as you can do with Windows 98. This feature doesn't appear to work on an ATX computer running Windows NT Workstation 4.0. However, reader Phil B. suggested that we try replacing Hal.dll with Hal.dll.softex from the Service Pack 5 disc.

We did, and the power-down works as expected.

Of course, we have no way of knowing this will work on your specific computer, but if you would like to try it, run Windows NT Explorer and copy Hal.dll.softex from your Service Pack 5 disc to the \Winnt\System32 folder. Now move to the System32 folder and rename Hal.dll to Hal.xxx (or whatever you want). Next, rename Hal.dll.softex to Hal.dll and restart the computer.

The next time you choose Shutdown, your system should power down after Windows NT Workstation 4.0 finishes its shutdown sequence.
