Finding hidden CD Keys

Your Windows 95 installation is corrupt and you need to reinstall, but you can't find that CD case it came in. What now? You can't reinstall without that CD-Key number that was on the case. Same thing goes for most Microsoft products on CD; Office, Publisher, the Plus pack, etc.

Well, actually, it isn't gone. Your previous installation of the software recorded the CD-Key code into the Registry. Here's where to find it:

* Launch REGEDIT by selecting Start/Run, typing regedit in the text box, and pressing Enter.

* Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, scroll down to Software.

* Find the Microsoft listing, and look for the directory that contains the software you need to reinstall.

* Double-click the ProductID listing, and select the middle two number strings (for example, in 12345-123-1234567-12345, select 123-1234567).

* Press Ctrl-C to copy the CD Key to the Clipboard, then paste it somewhere where you can find and reuse it later. It would be a good idea copy all your keys to a text document, and print them out for safekeeping.
