Create your own Tips List
Remember the Welcome screen that used to pop up every time you started Windows 95, the one with a new tip each time? (The reason we say "used to" is because most people have probably turned it off by now. J) Well, turn it back on - because we have a new use for it!
We're going to show you how to edit the Tips List so that you can display your own custom messages! First of all, if you DID turn it off, locate welcome.exe in your \windows folder, start it up and check the checkbox next to "Show this Welcome Screen next time you start Windows".
Start the Registry Editor (Start, Run, REGEDIT)
Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Tips.
Now, at this point, it would probably be a good idea to back up this entire section of the Registry in case you ever want to undo whatever it is you're about to change. This is easy. Highlight the Tips key in the left pane and from the menu select Registry / Export Registry File. Name this file Tips.reg and choose a location. If at any time you decide you want to restore this original information back into the registry, simply double-click Tips.reg.
In the right pane you can modify the tips that are displayed when Windows 95 starts.
Double-click on any entry and change the Value Data as you wish. (Don't change any of the Value names though, those numeric values between 0 and 47)
WARNING!! This is a REGISTRY HACK! And as such, you MUST FIRST make a backup of your Registry so that you can recover from any mistakes you might make. The Registry is a very unforgiving place if you don't know EXACTLY what you are doing. An incorrect Registry entry can render your entire system INOPERABLE. DO NOT attempt to change Registry settings without a Backup.
Don't say we didn't warn you...
The Configuration Backup Utility is one of the CD-Extras, so if you don't have the CD-ROM version of Windows 95, CLICK HERE to download it now.
