Steal your Associations back
After you install Internet Explorer, you may find that double-clicking .JPG or .GIF image files opens Internet Explorer rather than the applications that used to open when you double-clicked these files. This is because the Internet Explorer Setup stole these particular file associations. We have no idea why Microsoft insists on doing this with, not only IE but other MS apps as well. Wouldn't it be nice if the setup routine asked you first? After all, IE may be a great browser, but there a lot of applications that are much better suited to viewing images. Unfortunately, in newer versions of IE, this particular trait shows no signs of going away.
If you'd like, you can change the associations back to the way they were. Open Windows Explorer and choose the Options command from the View menu. Click the File Types tab and locate the file types in question. For example, find GIF Image. Select the file type and click Remove. When Windows 95 prompts you to confirm the change, click Yes. Go to the next file type (JPG) and repeat these steps. When you're done, click Close.
Now double-click one of the files in question. Windows 95 will open a dialog box that lets you choose the application you want to use with this file. Pick an app from the list if it already exists, or click Other to specify one. Make sure you check the checkbox that says "Always use this progam to open this file" to make the changes permanent. You're done.
