Removing NT from a Win95 PC

If you want to completely remove Windows NT from a Win95 PC and get rid of the Boot menu, here's what to do. First, you'll need a Windows 95 Startup disk. If you don't have one, open the Control Panel in Win95, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon, then the Startup disk tab - follow the instructions.

Restart your computer using the Startup disk. Next, update the hard-disk partition boot sector. To do this, type SYS C: at the A:\ prompt and press Enter. Remove the Startup disk and restart your computer. At this point, you should be in Windows 95, and you can use Windows Explorer to remove these files from your root directory:

NTLDR

NTDETECT.COM

BOOT.INI

BOOTSECT.DOS

NTBOOTDD.SYS (this one will only exist if you're using a SCSI boot partition)

Now you can delete the entire Windows NT directory tree (%SystemRoot%). If you had NT on a different partition than the one used by Win95, you can go ahead and delete NT's accompanying Program Files folder too. One last thing - make sure you locate and delete NT's swapfile, pagefile.sys. This one file could be 40Mb's or more.
