Direct Cable Connection

With Direct Cable Connection (and a parallel or serial cable), you can gain access to shared folders on another computer, even when your computer is not on a network. If the other computer is connected to a network, you can also gain access to that network. For example, if you have a portable computer, you can use a cable to connect it to your work computer and network.

To set up a direct cable connection with another computer, click the Start button, go to Programs, Accessories, and then click Direct Cable Connection.

Notes: If you do not see Direct Cable Connection on the Accessories menu, it is not installed. To install it, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, click the Windows Setup tab, select Communications, then the Details button. Place a checkmark next to Direct Cable Connection and press OK.

Also, Direct Cable Connection requires that you have the NetBEUI protocol installed. To check this go to Control Panel, Network and make sure it's listed in the "installed" window under the Configuration tab. if it isn't there you'll need to install it. In the same window, click the Add button, double-click the entry labeled Protocol, click Microsoft under Manufacturers, and in the right pane scroll down and select NetBEUI, then OK. Have your Windows installation CD handy.
