Rename your Boot Selections
When you install Windows NT and Windows 95 on the same computer, you might find that the Windows 95 boot selection reads "Microsoft Windows" rather than "Windows 95" or "Microsoft Windows 95". (Check out our July 2nd tip for a screenshot of this boot menu) You can change this label to anything you want. All you have to do is look in the root directory for the file named BOOT.INI. This is a read-only system file, so the first thing you're going to have to do is remove these attributes so you can edit this file. No problem, just go to a Command Prompt and type: attrib c:\boot.ini -r -s
Once that's done, you can use any text editor (NotePad will do) to open BOOT.INI. Locate the line "Microsoft Windows" and change it to "Microsoft Windows 95" (or whatever you want). Just make sure your new name is enclosed in "quotes". Save the file, then use the Command Prompt to once again make it a read-only system file: attrib c:\boot.ini +r +s
