Sharing folders securely

In a previous tip we told you about a network utility called NetWatcher. Netwatcher allows you to find out who's using your shared resources. You can also use it to disconnect a user, and add new shares or stop existing shares. Now let's talk a little about how you can add more security to your shared folders.

You can right-click on any folder, (or an entire drive) and select the "Sharing" tab to be presented with a list of options. The first choice is whether you want that folder to be shared or not. Other options include the ability to assign levels of access. You can mark a folder Read-Only or give a user Full Access, and assign a password for access. You can even specify two different passwords for both levels. Here's another trick, you can create hidden shares by placing a $ as the last character in the share name. Hidden shares can only be accessed if a user knows the entire UNC name for the hidden share.
