Change the Background Bitmap
In our last Internet Explorer tip, we showed you how to Remove the Background Bitmap behind IE's toolbar. If you'd rather replace the picture there, you can change it to any bitmap you want. In Internet Explorer 3.0x, go to View, Options, deselect Background bitmap on the General tab, and click OK. Open the Registry Editor (Start, Run, regedit) and navigate your way to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

Double-click the BackBitmap key in the right pane. On the Value data line of the resulting dialog box, type the path of the bitmap you'd like to use on your IE toolbar. Click OK, then close the Registry Editor. Back in IE, choose View, Options, deselect and then select Background bitmap, and click Apply. Click OK and you're done.

WARNING!! This is a REGISTRY HACK! And as such, you MUST FIRST make a backup of your Registry so that you can recover from any mistakes you might make. The Registry is a very unforgiving place if you don't know EXACTLY what you are doing. An incorrect Registry entry can render your entire system INOPERABLE. DO NOT attempt to change Registry settings without a Backup. Don't say we didn't warn you...
