Clear unwanted entries from Add/Remove Programs

Have you ever installed, then UNinstalled an application, only to find that it left an entry in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet? Or maybe you just don't want an entry showing up there. Whatever the reason, there's quick and easy way to remove any entry.

To remove an entry, do the following:

Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE). Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Uninstall. Click on the [+] next to Uninstall and a branch will expand under it, revealing all of the applications currently listed under Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs. Simply highlight any unwanted entries (with a single left-click) and hit Delete. One note about looking for your application in the Registry. It may not have the same name you see in the Add/Remove Programs dialog. If you're unsure about which entry to delete, you can usually click on a likely suspect in the list in the left pane to see a more thorough description in the right pane, as shown below.

Another, perhaps, EASIER way to accomplish this is to use Microsoft's Add-on utility, TweakUI. It comes as part of Microsoft's Powertoys. Among other things, it will automate the process of clearing items from the Add/Remove Programs list. CLICK HERE to download TweakUI now.

WARNING!! This is a REGISTRY HACK! And as such, you MUST FIRST make a backup of your Registry so that you can recover from any mistakes you might make. The Registry is a very unforgiving place if you don't know EXACTLY what you are doing. An incorrect Registry entry can render your entire system INOPERABLE. DO NOT attempt to change Registry settings without a Backup. Don't say we didn't warn you...

The Configuration Backup Utility is one of the CD-Extras, so if you don't have the CD-ROM version of Windows 95, CLICK HERE to download it now.
