Changing the Default Program Setup Folder
When you install most new programs, they install in C:\Program Files by default. But if you install most of your applications on drive D:, you may want to change the Windows NT 4.0 Workstation default to D:\Program Files.
You can change the default--but you have to tinker with a Registry Edit, and (as we've said before) always be careful when you edit the Registry. To proceed, click Start, Run, and type
regedit
then press Enter. When RegEdit opens, navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version
In RegEdit's right pane, double-click ProgramFilesDir and change the path in the String Editor to D:\Program Files (or whatever you want). Click OK to close the editor.
Next, double click ProgramFilesPath and change the value to D:\Program Files and click OK.
Finally, choose Registry, Exit to exit RegEdit and save your selections. When you restart the computer and install a program, make sure your changes work OK.
Note: Some programs will ignore the Windows NT Workstation 4.0 settings and still attempt to install in C:\Program Files.
