Set up a sound card in NT 4.0

Adding hardware in Windows 95 is relatively easy due to its Plug and Play architecture, plus the fact that it employs the Add New Hardware component in Control Panel. NT 4.0 has no such component, at least not yet. So what do you do once you've installed it, then discovered your sound card is nowhere to be found in the system? Don't panic - it's still an easy procedure.

First you have to determine the card's configuration, mainly the I/O port setting and interrupt number (IRQ). This should be identified in the card's documentation.

Next, turn off the computer, install the card, and restart the computer. Open Control Panel and double-click the Multimedia icon. When the dialog box opens, click the Devices tab.

Now select Audio Devices and click Add.

When offered a selection, choose the device that matches your sound card and click OK. (You'll be prompted to insert the NT 4.0 CD at this point in order to copy additional files).

Set the I/O to match your card and click Continue. Now set the interrupt to match and click OK.

You'll be prompted to restart. After the restart, your sound card should function.

If there's an interrupt conflict, you may need to set your sound card to a different interrupt. If so, make the change, reinstall the card, and repeat the installation procedure.
