More on Multiple Processors in NT 4.0
Last time, we showed you a Multiple Processor trick for Windows NT 4.0. Here's another, a way to set "Affinity" for selected tasks on a multiple processor equipped machine.
First of all, a little about "Affinity":
Windows NT is designed for efficient scaling and includes several strategies for balancing processor load. Applications can create an imbalance by setting a processor affinity, which binds a process to a single processor.
What this means is, NT lets you assign tasks to run on one processor or the other.
Again, go into Task Manager, click the Processes tab, this lets you see all of the currently running apps and their resource use. If you right-click on a process you see a choice labeled Set Affinity.... Selecting this gives you the ability to tell a process which processor to use.
Unfortunately, as far as we know, this setting will only last as long as you don't restart the machine. Once you reboot, this affinity setting is lost and must be reset manually.
