Showing only some file extensions
Open any folder and click View, Options. Now click the View tab. There, you'll find a checkbox labeled Hide MS-DOS file extensions for file types that are registered.. Checking this option will hide the 3-character extension for any file type that already has an association. It's sort of an "all or nothing" proposition though. How would you like to be able to hide some but not ALL file extensions? That might come in handy for new file types that you're not completely familiar with yet.
Here's how. Go into any folder, select View, Options, then click the View tab again. Go ahead and leave the Hide MS-DOS file extensions.. option checked to hide all extensions.
NOTE: If you're running IE4.0, the dialog will be displayed a little differently. The option you're looking for is now located in the Advanced Settings window and it's called Hide file extensions for known file types - as shown below.
Now click on the File Types tab. Locate the file type you want to view extensions for, highlight it, and click the Edit button on the right. At the bottom of that file type's options window, is a checkbox labeled Always show extension. Place a checkmark in it, amd from now on, even though you have Hide MS-DOS file extensions.. turned off, that one file type will continue to display its extension in Explorer windows.
