Deleting The New Menu

Did you know you can remove the "New" context menu from your user's capabilities? Its possible, but it's a drastic step that requires you to delete a Registry value. As always, be careful when editing the Registry. Since you may need to turn this menu option back on later, we'll work with a REG file.

To create the REG file, run Notepad and enter the following lines of code exactly as shown here. Where you see BLANK LINE GOES HERE, press Enter to create a blank line. Do not type BLANK LINE GOES HERE.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New] @=""

Choose File, Save As and name your new file NewKeyOff.reg. Locate a folder for your file and click Save. Before you do anything else, run Notepad again and create another REG file using the following lines of code. This one will restore the New item to your right-click menu.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New] @="{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}"

Make sure you enter the key exactly as shown here (with a blank line where you see one. You might find it easiest to copy the key and paste it into your new REG file.

This time, choose File, Save As and name the file NewKeyOn.reg. Locate a folder for the file and click Save.

You can now double-click NewKeyOff.reg to turn off the New key. To restore it, double-click NewKeyOn.reg.

In both cases, the change takes effect immediately. You do not need to restart the computer.
