Upgrade NT 4.0, Again
If you purchased the Upgrade version of Windows NT 4.0, you can upgrade prior versions of Windows NT. You cannot, however, run an Upgrade installation over an existing Windows NT 4 installation, which you might want to do to replace some corrupted files.
If you want to upgrade Windows NT version 4, you need to fool the Upgrade version of NT into believing that it is replacing an older version. To do that, use the Registry editor to locate the following Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
Edit the value current version (right-click the value and select Modify), changing it to 3.51. You can now perform an upgrade installation.
Reinstalling NT in this way will insure that your existing system settings aren't overwritten, plus you won't have to reinstall all of your applications.
