Save those Windows Update components
A while ago, we told you about Windows 98's new Windows Update feature. You probably tried it out by now, and discovered that usually it will simply download and install the updates in one shot. Furthermore, once these updates are installed, they are no longer available to you on the Windows Update site. After all, it assumes you still have the updates installed. (See the Windows Update log file tip for more information on where this information is stored.)

One downside to this convenience, is that you still have to download the updates for every machine you have, or if you ever need to reinstall. Another is that Windows Update doesn't work if you use Netscape or any browser other than Internet Explorer.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could download the individual components, so that you can reinstall them later if necessary, or just have them archived away to install on another machine? Well you can, and Microsoft even set up a separate site for this purpose.
