Shortcuts for DUN Entries Under NT 4.0
Under Windows 95 you can easily rename and change the icons for the Dial Up Networking shortcuts that you create. The process is not as easy under NT 4.0.

When you create a shortcut to a DUN entry under NT 4.0 from the More button menu of Dial Up Networking you get the same boring old icon for each and every shortcut you create. Worse yet, you can't change the icon by right clicking on it and selecting Properties because the Shortcut tab which contains the Change Icon button does not appear. Neither can you change the name of the shortcut since it corresponds directly to a DUN Address Book entry and requires the full name and the .RNK extension for the association to work properly.

However, you can get around this limitation fairly easily. First, move the current DUN shortcut to C:\WINNT\system32\ras (or some other logical place). Second, create a second shortcut on the Desktop to the DUN shortcut in C:\WINNT\system32\ras by the usual right click, drag and drop method from Explorer. This new shortcut will function as you expect and allow you to rename it to anything you want as well as change the icon from the Shortcut tab of its Properties box.

A good source for additional icons is \WINNT\system32\hticons.dll, which are the HyperTerminal icons. They all contain a phone somewhere in the image for easy identification as a dial-up based shortcut but are much more interesting than the usual DUN icon. Enjoy!
