File Information Utility
A while ago, we told you about the Windows 98 Resource Kit Tools Sampler and some of its tools. Well, here's one that isn't included as part of the normal installation but it's a real gem. It's called Microsoft File Information and it will tell you things you never knew about the files on your hard drive.
For instance, ever wonder what a file was, what it belonged to, and whether or not it was safe to delete? This utility will give you new insight into all of that. It will let you choose between searching for files by name or expension, and the information it displays is very informative. It even tells you where the file is located on the Win98 CD (or which floppy) and in which .CAB.
Look for two files on the Win98 CD in the \Tools\Reskit\Diagnose folder; FILEINFO.EXE and WIN98.MFI, copy them both to your machine, preferably into the same folder. Then you can create a shortcut to Fileinfo.exe in your System Tools folder. This is one utility you want, and perhaps more importantly, need.
Note: This utility requires certain system files that may only be available by installing the Windows 98 Resource Kit Tools Sampler, so make sure it is installed first.
