File Attributes in Details View
You may not have noticed this, but for some reason in Windows 98, whenever you view the contents of any Explorer window in Details view, there's no longer a column showing File Attributes like there used to be in Windows 95.
Not a problem, you can easily turn this feature back on by yourself, with a simple Registry hack.
- Open the Registry Editor (Start, Run, REGEDIT)
- Navigate your way down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
- In the right pane, look for the entry named ShowAttribCol
- Right-click ShowAttribCol and select Modify.
- Change the Value Data entry from a 0 to a 1
- Close the Registry Editor
Now for some of you, that Registry entry (ShowAttribCol) might not exist. Here's how to add it:
- Open the Registry Editor (Start, Run, REGEDIT)
- Navigate your way down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
- To add the new entry, right-click anywhere in the right pane and select NEW, DWORD Value
- Rename the entry title (New Value #1) to ShowAttribCol
- Right-click ShowAttribCol and select Modify.
- Change the Value Data entry from a 0 to a 1
- Close the Registry Editor
A reboot should not be required. From now on, whenever using Detail View in Explorer, you should see the Attributes column.
Once this entry exists in the Registry, you van turn this features on and off again right from within Explorer. Simply go to any Explorer window and select View, Folder Options, then click the View tab. In the Advanced Settings window, scroll down and look for Show file attributes in Detail View. Place a checkmark in the box next to it to enable Attributes, or remove the checkmark to disable Attributes.
