Print to a File in NT
Last year we told you how to Create a "Print To File" print driver for Windows 95. You can do the same thing under NT but the procedure is a bit different.
Click Start, Settings, Printers to open the Printers folder
Double-click the Add Printer icon.
The next window asks whether this will be a Local Printer (My Computer) or a printer on a network (Network printer server). Generally, you'll want this to be a Local Printer. Check one and click Next. (For this demonstration we used My Computer)
Next, you'll see a window asking you to select which port you want to use, this is where most people miss this option. Scroll all the way to the bottom and check File. Click Next.
When you see the next window, you'll need to select the Make and Model of your printer. In the Manufactures scrollbox, select Generic. In the Printers scrollbox, select Generic / Text Only. Click Next.
Give your new Printer a name, the default will be Generic / Text Only. Click Next.
Last but not least you'll be asked whether this resource will be shared across a network or not - make the appropriate choice. Click Next and Finish.
That's is, you're done. The ability to print documents and information directly to a file is a great tool - make use of this one! Best of all, it won't cost you a penny.
