Quick Disable for Multiple Processors
Why would you want to disable all but one processor on a multiple processor equipped NT machine? Well, suppose you're having problems and you've eliminated most other causes, and now you suspect a processor might be going south. This makes it easy to try your processors, one at a time, until you locate the culprit - without having to go through reinstalling NT each time you change the configuration.
To go back to using only one processor in NT, open Explorer and go to your root folder (usually C:). Locate Boot.INI double-click it to open it. The file should look like the one shown here. (You may want to make a backup of this file first.)
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=10
Default=C:\
[Operating Systems]
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00"
Navigate to the end of the quoted part of the WINNT line and add /ONECPU as shown below. This disables all but the first CPU in a multiple processor machine.
Now save the file as Boot.INI and restart Windows NT. From here you can begin to swap out processors and try then one at a time.
