Accessing Preformatted Floppy Disks
On a number of occasions, I have run across entire boxes of floppy disks that failed to work in Windows NT Workstation 4.0. Initially I suspected that the disks had not been formatted at all, but then I discovered that they worked fine in Windows 98.

After some research, I discovered that these disks lacked the media descriptor byte. Apparently Windows NT Workstation 4.0 requires this identifier. If this happens to you, you will get the message 'STOP: The disk media is not recognized, it may not be formatted.

The only workaround I know of is to format the disks using Windows NT Workstation 4.0.
